There are a lot of tools out there to help you use, analyze, compare, find, and organize Twitter, but let’s face it, most people skip over the basics. In a nutshell, here are 4 quick things you can do to turbo-boost your Twitter experience.
- Post a picture of yourself. Social media is about trust and relationships. Using an avatar, cartoon character, etc. is fun and shows a bit of your personality, but I prefer to connect visually with real faces.
- Your profile should include your location and keywords that interest you. Again, we’re going for transparency and conversation.
- Use a link tracking service (like budurl.com) to include a trackable link as your URL for more information. This will tell you how many people are clicking on this link to learn more about you. Point this link to your blog, your website, your LinkedIn profile, etc., but make it educational. Don’t try to “sell” through Twitter by sending them to a landing page for your product. Use this click as a conversation starter.
- Use the custom background image option in Twitter to upload a customized background that includes your picture, logo, contact information, etc. Again, using BudURL or another tracking service will tell you which links actually drive traffic (especially since it is an image and not clickable).
Like I said, this isn’t rocket science, but I’m amazed at how many people are forgetting the basics.

#BudURL is awesome!
Then you can go to Twitter’s search page and look up all Tweets on that topic. Case in point:
http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23BudURL
OK, this shows us that we all need to write BudURL more often in our Tweets.
