BudURL University: Marketing 101

by sarah on February 6, 2009

There have been plenty of sites out there discussing how marketers can use BudURL. But given the quantity of questions we get about “how do I use BudURL?” we thought it would be good to share a few basics.

As many marketers know, social media has been a blessing and a curse at the same time. It’s an amazing tool that can used to have a genuine dialogue with your customers. But, it’s very hard to prove return of investments (ROI). In other words, how do you prove to your boss that social media is worth spending money on? You, as a marketer/public relations director/communications director, know that social media is essential to the growth of your company. But how do you show your boss that it’s worth it?

By using BudURL, you can track where your links are going and when & how many people are clicking on them. This kind of information can help you better reach your target audience.

For example, lets say you post a blog about a new product/service (which you link to with a BudURL). Then you post that blog’s link as another BudURL on social networking sites. Now, you sit and wait. If you’re finding that most of your viewers are clicking through to your website in the afternoon, maybe you should try being online in the afternoon. Then you are readily available to answer questions and comments immediately. Or better yet, maybe that’s when your website should promote deals and discounts?

By looking at the BudURL you linked to on social networking sites, you can see which sites your customers are using. These are the networks your company needs to be an active part of. These are the networks where you will be able to have great feedback and discussion about your company.

Now that you’ve done all this, here’s how you prove that social media is worth it. You use the data that your BudURL’s have collected and visually show your boss the increase in clicks to your website compared to increases in sales.

This is our take on a few ways that BudURL can be used in marketing.

Additional reasons for using Budurl:

1) track what headlines and copy your audience responds to
2) discover what kinds of stories are most popular with your audience
3) learn what time of the day generates the best response
4) find out how long a post in Twitter can be counted on to generate traffic (it’s stickiness)
5) using the customize feature, you can potentially test whether the URL has an impact on click throughs

Hope that helps!

Adam
ps on a somewhat humorous note, my highest CTR so far was for a story I posted about the Google Maps Van killing a deer :D
